The Last Dinner Party
Alternative
Another influential force among the artists to watch in 2024 are BRIT Rising Star winners The Last Dinner Party. The London-based art-rock five-piece formed two years ago, but hit the ground running in a big way in 2023, releasing four electric singles. Abigail Morris (vocals), Emily Roberts (guitar, mandolin, flute), Lizzie Mayland (guitar), Georgia Davies (bass) and Aurora Nishevci (drums) also embarked on their first UK tour that year, including their Reading Festival debut and some major activity on the European festival circuit. All this and more has left the baroque-pop community on the edge of their seats in anticipation of The Last Dinner Party’s debut album, Prelude To Ecstasy, which is set to arrive early in 2024. The all-female quintet have been likened to an amalgamation of Queen, Kate Bush and Florence Welch. They’ve truly arrived with a bang, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

As the worldwide popularity of drum & bass increases, so too does the diversity within the genre. Singer/songwriter and producer Kenya Grace brandishes an incredibly unique style of liquid drum & bass that sounds completely original. She sings on her own tracks, adding a lighter, almost pop-like component while still stretching the limits of liquid drum & bass. Kenya Grace is leading a new wave of internet drum & bass producers and doing it unconditionally her own way.

Chappell Roan

The pop world is about to see the meteoric rise of another big star, in the shape of Chappell Roan. With her distinctively powerful voice and effortless stage presence, we wouldn’t be surprised if 2024 is the biggest year yet for the 25-year-old singer. Roan has gained attention for releasing a run of consistently great singles ever since she traded in her life in Missouri, six years ago, for a go at the music world in LA. Her career trajectory took a massive upturn with the September 2023 release of her debut album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, and with her disco-infused sound and celebration of queerness, Roan has attracted a deluge of fans, more than earning her the top spot on this list of artists to watch in 2024. Her unique stage presence is unfalteringly energetic yet calming, and she’s quickly managed to curate a safe and joyfully chaotic environment with her live shows. Roan’s colourful world is about to expand even further as she prepares to open for Olivia Rodrigo in the new year. Get ready to see the star’s bejewelled stage corsets and mane of red curls take the North American leg of the GUTS World Tour by storm!

Elmiene

With a voice that spans the smoothness of The Weeknd and the jazzy instincts of Anderson .Paak, British-Sudanese singer-songwriter Elmiene is by far and away one of the most exciting artists going right now. His two EPs to date, however, EL-MEAN and Marking My Time – both released this year – don’t just put his voice front and centre, but demonstrate his Prince-like desires to experiment. We predict big things for his debut album, whenever that may come.

Xavi

Mexican American 19-year-old singer-songwriter Xavi (born Joshua Xavier Gutiérrez) kicked off 2024 with his first No. 1 on any Billboard chart thanks to his romantic corrido “La Diabla,” which crowned the Hot Latin Songs chart on Jan. 6. The song also currently sits at No. 2 on the Billboard Global 200 Excl. U.S. and at No. 4 on the Billboard Global 200 chart. Born in Phoenix, the artist has become a bright new name in regional Mexican music thanks to his authentic and romantic approach. And with his unique, vibrant vocals and charming humbleness, he has connected perfectly with Gen Z through TikTok. Plus, unlike most of his counterparts, his biggest hits have been solo numbers, not collabs. He is all set to embark on his first tour later this year and has signed with WME for global representation across all areas. — I.F.

HotWax are the UK’s most thrilling new live act, bar none. Formed in Hastings by singer/guitarist Tallulah Sim-Savage and bassist Lola Sam when they were 15 (later joined by drummer Alfie Sayers), they are everything a great rock band should be. Sim-Savage howls and snaps like the lovechild of Karen O and Courtney Love; her lyrics are about doubt, guilt and infatuation. There are guitar solos aplenty, sludgy bass lines and thrashing drums galore. They’ve already opened for The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs – now they need their own, bigger stages to match that stadium-sized sound. ROC

Khamari

Embracing more of a stripped-down, understated aesthetic of vulnerability in his music, Khamari has benefited from an incredible breakout year. Deriving influence from an eclectic bunch of genre-elevating artists — The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi and Mac Miller — to name a few, Khamari has inherited his signature style that is just as relatable as it is refreshing. Withdrawn from gratuitous gimmicks, Khamari’s graceful yet simplistic approach to music is aptly reminiscent of fellow newcomer Leon Thomas and a young Frank Ocean. Thoroughly indulgent in the blissful nature of acoustics and warm melodies, Khamari will become much more prevalent within the modern-day R&B scene as time progresses.

Making art solely sourced from Black joy, they’re playing dress-up, reclaiming their bodies with reverence, and redefining the fracture between silly and sultry. Whether it’s through Reels, TikTok, or projected on the back of your eyelids, it’s been impossible to escape the all-consuming intoxication of Flyana Boss. Placing Lola Young on a Ones to Watch list for next year might seem like a slight misnomer. But given how much the 22-year-old still has to give following the release of her terrific debut album, My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely, released earlier this year, we expect the BRIT School alumni to take even greater strides. With her smoky vocals and huge, ever-growing fanbase, Lola has a cut-through that no amount of marketing could orchestrate. You’d be wise to start getting used to her name.

Fat Dog

It’s only taken one song – the exuberant, fantastic ‘King of the Slugs’ – and a series of hype-building live shows to turn London four-piece Fat Dog into bonafide ones to watch for 2024. Vocalist Joe Love has the same sardonic delivery as most of the post-punkers who defined the last five years in British guitar music, but the band behind him takes things in a very different direction. There are hints of klezmer, gabber, dance and more in there, all defined by a sense of unhinged chaos. If this is a sign of what’s coming from the offspring of The Windmill generation, we should all be very excited. (WR)

We’ll be shocked if Cristale isn’t regarded among the very best in UK rap in the not so distant future. She grew up in a Caribbean household in South London with influences spanning Buju Banton to Stormzy, and scored her breakthrough hit in 2022 collaborating with Jamaican dancehall artist Laa Lee on ‘Bong Bing’, which spread like wildfire around the internet, pairing his upbeat energy with her UK-inflected tenacity. That came to the fore on the debut EP ‘What It’s Like To Be Young’ that followed, folding hard-hitting, confessional bars into raw drill beats. Cristale has been levelling up across 2023, keeping up her unflinching storytelling and social commentary while honing a mastery of flow and wordplay that’s truly something to behold — as her standout contributions to GRM’s Daily Duppy and Mixtape Madness’ Plugged In series attest. She also made her acting debut in the final season of Top Boy where she rapped her soundtrack contribution ‘Roadents’, no doubt welcoming swathes of the show’s huge fanbase into her own in the process. And that’s only going to get bigger, with a new musical project in the works for 2024, as well as more appearances on screen with roles in the Kano-starring Netflix film The Kitchen and the TV adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’ best-selling novel Queenie.

I like to be pretty spontaneous. I like to have a routine, but so much of my life is someone being like, ‘Hey, come over and let’s do this thing,’ or ‘Have you ever done this before? No? Cool. Let’s do this.’ That’s a lot of my life, and I’ve also brought a lot of that into my artistic process.”

Listening to a Brazy song is like stepping into a thumping club bathroom chock full of your best friends. The London-based Nigerian artist has described her genre as “afro-sexy-afro-future”, which pretty much sums it up. An artist with borderless vision, Brazy spits bars (in English, Yoruba, French, and Mandarin, mind you) over hypnotic, hip-snaking production as on her trap-inflected debut “Siren” and the gloriously maximalist “Attends”. It feels a long way away, but come May next year, Brazy’s bouncy beats will be the sound of the summer. Annabel Nugent

It seems risky to try and identify any one “trend” in new music for 2024, but from this list alone we’ve noticed that emerging artists seem particularly enamoured by a darker, rock-leaning sound. Among them is Aziya, a London-born singer and producer whose single “atomic” thrives on a Cure and Killing Joke-indebted bass line and sullen vocals that question the existence of love in the modern age. You might have spotted her among the dubiously crowned “English Roses” in a profile by Tatler back in 2017. Make no mistake, though: Aziya’s no wallflower. Roisin O’Connor

If the title of her debut album, Hell Is A Teenage Girl, doesn’t tip you off, Hannah Grae makes music about that terrible time in every woman’s life – one that she herself only exited relatively recently. Grae, now 21, reflects on growing pains with arresting immediacy over spiky, yearning pop-punk beats. With kiss-off titles like “Well I Hope Ur Happy” and wry lyrics such as “I never understood the phrase, it’s just a phrase”, it’s easy to compare Grae to Gen Z girl-of-the-moment Olivia Rodrigo, but doing so ignores the singular voice the Port Talbot-born musician brings to the table.

King Isis had a big year 2023, and promises more in 2024. Refusing to be defined by any one genre, they masterfully mix R&B, alternative rock and indie-pop with sprinkles of jazz and punk, and their wide array of influences – and deep adoration for Erykah Badu – are clear as crystal on their 2023 EP, scales. The Californian talent fuses an eclectic sound with vulnerable lyrics, with their tracks jumping with ease from angsty to wistful to tongue-in-cheek. With a performance at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival already announced for May, and their latest single hinting towards a potential follow-up to scales, the self-professed “punk rock fairy” is certainly among the most exciting artists to watch in 2024.

Frozemode might’ve been formed over a drunken late-night phone call in the depths of lockdown, but their high-octane sound bears none of the stasis of those lost few years. Rather, the rap-punk trio – I.V.GATLIN, Cho-Hollo, and Lisong – pride themselves on attitude drenched alt.hip-hop and switchblade-sharp storytelling rooted in the beauty and brutality of real life. Combining jagged guitars and venomously spit bars could feel old-hat at this point, but it was the incorporation of the socially-conscious urgency of London’s grime scene that made debut LP DEMODE so essential.
